THRIVING IN THE 21st CENTURY: YOUR GUIDE TO ADDING YEARS TO LIFE AND LIFE TO YEARS
The 21st century has brought with it unprecedented challenges such as reduced life expectancy, reproductive health, quality of life, quality of soil, immune defense and repair, and digestive function. Despite many challenges, there are remarkable opportunities for those who choose more wisely. This book is a guide to recon- necting and rediscovering your unique healing capacities and in- corporating life-changing habits and rituals that will add life to years and years to life. Starting with today’s scientific evidence and incorporating Eastern practices, Dr. Jaffe invites the reader on a journey of self-assess- ment, self-discovery,and self-awareness. You are unique. Your chemistry, your relationships, and your history all interconnect to make you who you are. Dr. Jaffe explains what to measure, what the measurements mean functionally, and what actions to take to achieve thriving health.
“Russ Jaffe never ceases to astonish me, from the day he walked into my lab, to his sterling contributions as a young pathologist to this marvelous compelling book on "How to thrive in the 21st century.” The book weaves the story of his own lifestyle and recommendations for everyone to consider in defining a lifestyle that if followed leads to a more productive and satisfying life. It is a "must read."
Carl Franzblau, PhD
“Dr. Russell Jaffe synthesizes all the multi-disciplinary research in this holistic critique of medical education, research, science and practice, embedded in planetary evidence of the unsustainable, toxic technological trajectories of Western economies, lifestyles and ideologies of “progress.” This book should be required reading for all in science policy, politicians, educators, financial and business leaders, as well as aware citizens worldwide concerned with our common human future on Earth."
Hazel Henderson, D.Sc.Hon., FRSA
“Dr. Russell Jaffe helps reintegrate a medical system that too often defines health as the absence of symptoms, not the presence of vitality and resilience, and measures success by pills and procedures, not quality of life. Distilled from a lifetime
of medical innovation and global insight, his practice reveals effective paths to healing that put physiology before pharmacology, the body’s wisdom before risky interference, informed choice before standard of care, and your own needs before vendors’ interests."
Amory B. Lovins, Adjunct Professor, Stanford University
“This book is written with you the consumer in mind and is not filled with overtly unpronounceable words like many other health books. Dr. Jaffe keeps it on a more basic level for all readers to enjoy. This book provides easy to do suggestions and guidance to make simple changes in your life that can have a positive impact on how you feel over time. Dr. Jaffe is a refreshing and insightful author that speaks from decades of experience and wisdom in this book. He speaks of how while working with the National Institute of Health, NIH) his goal was to "debunk" complimentary medicine and natural health and how his journey led him to do exactly the opposite. In the Appendix there are suggestions on how to make those changes with checklists that provide help to you along the way. Enjoy!”

COMING SOON! Bhanté Dharmawara
Bhanté Dharmawara (1889-1999) was a pioneering Buddhist monk who saved thousands of lives, including the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh. Behind the scenes, he quietly piloted a new form of socially conscious Buddhism. He performed healings, brought harmony to fractious international situations, and had a wonderful tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.
He also lived to be 110 years old.
Bhanté guided the young Dalai Lama in diplomacy, taught French to a teenage Indira Gandhi, and was Prime Minister Nehru’s confidante as India was first becoming independent. Before he did all that, he was a Cambodian lawyer and courtier. Through his interventions, thousands of lives were spared during World War I in Europe.
You may never have heard of Bhanté until right now. That was by his design. He avoided headlines – yet he was a sophisticated strategic advisor to political leaders. He guided them and they changed the world.
Bhanté’s influence remains profound. This book reflects him….. He specifically wanted the cornucopia of knowledge that he imparted to his students to be shared with the world after the 20th anniversary of his physical passing when the need for his insights would be even greater and timelier.
Welcome to his journey – and yours.
Reviews
Dr. Jaffe’s book is a gift to the world. At a time when our lives are governed by noise and ever increasing pressure to have more and be faster we lose focus of what is really important. Our heads are firmly embedded in technological clouds, we seem to be interconnected like never before and, yet, our hearts and souls feel lost and hollow. World events are shaped by mindless, ignorant leaders lacking compassion, thus creating great uncertainty for us all. At a time like this we need to change course, dive deep and find ourselves by increasing our self-awareness. Dr. Jaffe shares with us Bhanté Dharmawara’s experiences and teachings and shows us how we can develop our spiritual capacity and balance it with the physical aspects of well-being. In this journey we discover the great power of silence and the value of slowing down. We learn how to balance the color energies in our bodies through ancient green light meditation. Only if we manage to find peace and compassion within us will we be able to have a positive impact on others. This is one of the big messages of this book. Let us be inspired by the wisdom of Bhanté Dharmawara and follow the truly holistic path to enlightenment and health as set out by Dr. Jaffe.

This account of Bhanté Dharmawara, a Buddhist monk from Cambodia, is an example of someone hidden in plain sight. His teachings are more relevant today than ever, as they provide an antidote to the pervasive stress and anxiety of our times. hanté’s practice of Engaged Buddhism has never found a more eloquent spokesperson, as he exalts practice over dogma, happiness over grief, and — employing a Taoist saying — leading from behind. Bhanté was equally at home with Southeast Asian royalty, renowned spiritual teachers, and Indian “untouchables.” No biography of the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Jawaharlal Nehru, or Indira Gandhi will be complete unless Bhanté’s impact on their lives has been cited. Dr. Russell Jaffe has presented Bhanté’s life and times in a vivid, engrossing style that illuminates the monk’s teachings on his own life and — more importantly — the way in which they can impact the lives of its readers, leaving them wiser, happier, and deeply appreciative for each day of their own existence.

You validated all of Bhante’s efforts in sharing his knowledge of so many things and you also presented the results of your personal application and devotion to such knowledge. We, each of us, that applied the discipline arrived at our own “warrior knowledge” (Thanissaro Bikkhu) and how brilliantly you come to the conclusion of your efforts. You weave a story that I feel is timeless and will, hopefully, revive the interest and intensity of transformation in a new generation and lead to a Universal Sangha.
